Talking Shop with Steven Rourke of Ormeau Golf Club, Belfast

What’s Hot?
ProQuip wet suits are fling off the shelves at the moment, they usually do at this time of the year as everyone’s preparing for the season. It’s been a bit wet lately too!
What hardware do you stock?
I have quite a small sho so I don’t stock too much. I have a lot of MD Golf and Ram.
Apparel?
Ashworth and Proquip.
Just in?
I haven,t got anything that’s just come in but I do have quite a bit on the way. I have the new Wilson utility clubs coming in as well as some Jaxx equipment for the juniors.
Membership?
We have 500 which is quite good for a nine hole course in the middle of Belfast.
Do you have any incentives to increase that?
We are trying to build membership up at the moment and we’ve started a deal where you can spread the joining fee over two years which is working well.
How do you foster customer loyalty?
I have to keep our prices lower than the high street. The members are usually pretty sharp at telling me if they can get something cheaper somewhere else!
What’s the biggest challenge you face at the moment?
We’re going to do a lot of work on the course’s drainage as we’ve had some problems lately. We’ve been closed for 29 days since Christmas due to flooding so it’s something that needs addressing.
What advice do your members seek from you?
Quite a lot, especially with the change in the driver laws at the beginning of the year. But I will often stand outside the shop and they will ask me for hints and tips. I’ll take a look at their clubs too and recommend any changes usually to the grips as we have an elderly membership and they don’t realise their grips should be renewed.

I offer five lessons for the price of four which has proved popular.
